Travelling Around the World
Travelling around the world in search of the sun
In the 1960s, holiday resorts in Europe, particularly those in Spain, began to attract large numbers of British tourists. The effect on the traditional UK seaside resort was profound, and some of the less popular ones began to take on the appearance of small ghost towns, even during the summer months. In recent years, however, European destinations have been losing out to those further afield.
The so-called Sunshine State of Florida attracts millions of tourists from the UK and elsewhere every year, with almost year-round sunshine and, of course, the spectacular theme parks to satisfy young and old alike. It seemed the tide had turned against the Mediterranean package holiday once and for all.
New destinations for holiday-makers
However, Dubai has emerged as a popular destination with British travellers in the few years, and is giving Florida a run for its money. The weather is just as hot, if not more so, and the travelling time is far less. The oil-rich Emirate has grown into a thriving holiday haven for many people. It would appear we have more choice than ever when it comes to booking our holidays now.
Spoilt for choice when travelling the globe
It should be pointed out that the Mediterranean resorts still remain the destinations of choice for most Britons, however. Many of them are only two or three hours away by plane, and there’s no jet-lag to contend with. Also, after many years of catering for our tourists, most locals have an excellent command of the English language.
