Why Nuisibles got me thinking

I saw the word ‘Nuisibles’ on the side of a van in France last month, and I wondered what it actually meant. My first thought was that it may have been someone’s surname, perhaps an electrician or a carpenter, for example. I then considered it was perhaps the name of a town or city, and that the van was owned by a council or other local authority.

For some reason, it was intriguing me, so when I returned to the UK I looked the word up on the Internet. It turns out that it means pests, and the van was owned by the local pest control specialist. I’d glad I got to the bottom of the situation, because my curiosity was becoming something of an obsession.
